Special issue for the area of “Pyli”

 

It is a small beautiful town located 18 km west of Trikala. The magnificent gorge which separates the mountains Itamos and Koziakas and joins Epirus with Thessaly is the landmark of the area.
The town is of great cultural interest. There are Byzantine and post Byzantine monuments. The picturesque villages of Aspropotamos and Arta can be easily reached from Pyli.

Cultural heritage and monuments

  • The famous bridges of the Portaikos river
  • The arched bridge built in 1514 by Saint Vissarion
  • The Kondyli bridge built in November 1934
  • The Gikas bridge built in 1960-1961
  • The Suspension bridge built in 1981
    During the Hellenistic era the fortresses in Itamos were checkpoints for people who travelled to Agrafa and Pindos.

Churches- Monasteries

  • “Panagia ton Megalon Pylon”  dates back to 1283 and it is located near Pyli in the quarters of Porta Panagia.
  • The Holy Mother’s Assumption Church in “Goura” dates back to 1743. It has been plundered at least 5 times until now.
